This lake is Nepal’s largest and the name of the park was borrowed from it.

Best time to visit the park is septembert to November and April to May.From
December to March, the temperature drops to the below freezing,and heavy
snowfall accumulates up to one meter,closing high passes. April to june is
warmer but season gives way to monsoon through June to August.

Features of the Rara Lake:
Rara lake is the main feature of the park. The
lake,in 2007,was declatred as a wetland of international importance, i.e. the
Ramsar site. The lake is surrounded by magnificent conifer forests. Its radiant
blue water is home to the snow trout(Asla,the only fish species recorded in the
lake).During winter,bird lovers can enjoy ma y migratory birds.In
summer,Himalayan flowers surround the lake creating a colorful landscape.The
elevation of the park ranges from 2800 m to 4039m. chucherama peak(4039) is the
highest point and on the southern side,forms an excellent backdrop to the Lake
Rara.The snowcapped summits of Ruma kand(3731m) and Malika kand(3444m) on the
northern side of the lake,provide beautiful views of the lake to the south,and
to the beautiful Mugu-Karnali River valley to the north. Murma peak also
provides an excellent views of the park areas. The Lake drains to Mugu Karnali River via Nijar
khola.

People
living in RNP and its Buffer zone(BZ) areas belong to the Hindu religion. There
are several ancient temples and shrines of Local importance in this region. The
famous temples in Mugu district include Chayanath,Khesma
malika,Tharpa,Choti,and MIyi.There are several Caves in the hills surrounding
the park lake. Deuda is the popular cultural dance this area.

Vegetation
The majority of vegetation in the park is dominated
by blue pine and different species of rhododendrons are associated with it.
Blue pine,herbs,marshlands and tussock grasslands inhabit the area surrounding
the lake. In the Nisa khola valley,pine and spruce give way to mixed woodland
containing walnuts and Himalayan poplar.Rhodendron,fir,oak,and birch species
and found in the sub alpine region.
Guchi Chayau(Morchella conica),Jatamasi(Nardostachys
grandiflora),Satuwa(paris polyphylla),Sugandhwal(Valeriana
Jatamansi),Kutki(Picrorhiza Scrophulariaeflora),Bojho(Acorus
Calamus),Timmur(Zanthaozylum armatum),Lauthsalla(Taxus
Buccata),Yarsagumbas(Cordiceps Sinensis),Dhupi(Juniperus
spp.),Seabuckthorn(Hyppophae tibetana),Chiraito(Swertia
Chirata),Panchaaunle(Dactylorthiza Hatazirea),Attis(Aconitum
heterophyllum),Padmachal(Rheum austraale),Pakhanbed (Bergenia
ciliate),Okhar(juglans regia) and Jhau(permelia spp.) are the high valued
medicinal herbs of RNP and BZ community forest.

Mammals
About 51 mammal specices have recoreded in the park.
Park is an ideal habitat for the endangered Musk Deer(Mochus
chrysogaster),Himalayan black Bear(Ursus selenarctos thibetanus),Red
Panda(Alilurus Fulgens),Himalayan Ghoral(Nemorhaedus goral),Jackal (Canis
aureus), Himalayan Thar(hgemitragus Jemlhicus),yellow throated Marten.

Birds
So far 272 bird species have been recorded in
RNP,Rara lake serves as an important transit situation for migratory waterfowls
across the Himalayas.Coots(fulica atra) are plentiful in the alke and several
of them stay even for the whole year. Great created grebe(Podiceps
nigiricollis),Red crested pochard(Netta ragina),mergus merganster) and
Gulls(larus spp.visit the park during the winter. Other common birds in the
park are snow cock(Teragallus Himalayensis),Chukor partridge(Alectoris
chukor),impeyan pheasant (Lophophorus impejanus),Kalij pheasant(lophura
leucomelana ) and Blood pheasant(ithaginis cruentus).

Fish
There are endemic species of snow trout(schizothorax
macropthalus,schizothorax nepalensis and schzothorax varaenis) are recorded in
the lake.

Facilities
There are health
post located 25 minutes walk from the park head quarters. But a
comp9rehensive first aid kit including medicines for intertinal disorders is
advisable. Ther are guest house located next to the park . few other hotels
cum tea shops with lodging facilities
are available out die of the park. There are well places views towers, paddled
steel boats, rubber boats and traditional wooden boats inside the park.

Rara lake trek itinerary
Rara lake trek itinerary is depend upon mode of
transportation. Rara lake trek by road all the way up to rara lake also
possible. Rara lake trek by road plus by flight also possible.
Option 1. Kathmandu to Nepalgunj flight then again
flight to Jumla, 3 days trek to Rara lake then fourth day come in Talcha
airport to fly Nepalgunj.
Option 2. Kathmandu to Surkhet by bus then flight to
Jumla then 3 days trek to Rara lake in the fourth day back to the Nepalgunj by
flight from Talcha airport.or Kathmandu to
Nepalgunj by bus or flight to Talcha or jumla.
Option 3. Kathamndu to jumla or Nagma by bus it take
27 hours. From Nagma or Jumla you can start the trek to the Rara lake. Bus
reach in Surkhet in the morning around 6 am then takes 6 pm for the kalikot.
There are rule no moving bus further from kalikot after 6 pm. You have to stay in the bus
during the night or find out the hotel. Bus road is narrow and many bends from
Surkhet to Manma kalikot. Then 71 km from Manma to jumla. It is the road very
scary. If you like to adventurous journey take a bus to jumla from Kathmandu.
Option 4. You can hire a four wheel jeep to go Rara
lake.
Option 5. From Simikot to Rara lake you can trek
then flight out Nepalgunj.

I take the
bus:
I buy the ticket to go Jumla after I phone
about the weather in Hotel Jumla.
They inform me no snowing and take two
days to reached rara lake from Jumla. I was wander and curious about the
Karnali Highways. I heard Road is already concreate from Surkhet to Jumla. I heard
it takes 27 hours to access jumla in a 817.80 km road distance from Kathmandu. Since Many
years I had ambition to visit and see raa lake and surrounding village plus
culture. Experience from the trekking
guide to trekking operator in Nepal, I had not been visiting Rara Lake so, this trip I started on 18 Jan
2016 , I become hearty happy . I meet
police , government service holder and
policeman in the bus. They also asked to me about my destination and purpose to
visit Rara Lake. I just come to research and see the rara lakes. Most of the
time I have that reply to most of the
people in the Bus. One man from the jumla sinja also staying same seat row and he frequently told about
the walking routes from Surkhet to
Jumla. He shows the old trail of the local
people from the bus. Like a hiring guide frequently he told about the place, name of the
rivers, Market and further bus distance to Jumla.
I had a
concept Rara lake is only access from the Jumla but Local person jumla who seat
besides me suggest me to go Rara lake from Nagma instead to go from Jumla it
become shortcut than Jumla. Then I decide the following his guidance to go Rara
lake and thinking after Rara Lake I go
to Jumla from Chutha and Danphe lagna. Also from Nagma there are Gravel road to
Gamgadhi , the district headquarters of Mugu. Ghamgadhi is 2 hours down from the Rara Lake. Before
going rara lake I had internet google search for the proper Itinerary. According
to the google Search I found following

Bus is
moving after kalikot check post 76 km before from Jumla. There was already sign of the raining. I see next top of the Hills was raining. Then I beginning to afraid to
falls snow. Even I had strong determination and passion to go Rara Lake. I thought
I wait 2-3 days in jumla because I already pass many difficult bus road and I was
already in the mouth of the Jumla. When I reached in Nagma already snowing. I
get down from the bus at Nagma 40 km ahead from the Jumla Bazzar. Iam looking
for the Hotel then staying there with Local people. Tomorrow morning was also
snowing , which is more than Yesterday. Still my desire to go rara lake did not die. Even in
the Afternoon snowing wasnot closed. Then I decided to go Jumla and wait 2-3
days tand to see Jumla. I ride a bus at
afternoon but bus did not move after
reaching nearly to Jumla. It is just 10 km remaining to go Jumla. Bus was
slippery and going to become dark. Then I
decided to stay that night in the Hotel . Next morning I reached jumla bazzar
which took 2 hours to reach jumla. I was happy in the morning because after I wake up I saw sunrise around
the hills. Then I extremely happy and
wish will not further snowing next day. People was enjoying playng snowing in
the Jumla Bazzar. I take a tea in a local tea shop and asking the details about
the Raa lake trail from Jumla. Tea shop owners says , tomorrow her villager back to choutha , you can join
them. Then my happiness knows no bounds.
Then I asked contact number of the group of villagers then I go to look Hotel in Jumla. I was stay
at the visit Jumla hotel. Before that I asked
the prices of the Hotel. Local journalist
and Poltical leaders suggest me
to stay at Hotel mansarovar but price was high for me. For the single room with
Hotshower cost Rs 1000 NPR. Then I move another
hotel called Hotel visit Jumla where was
Rs. 200 NPR the room without
attached bathroom.

I moved
to Choutha from Jumla
Next morning
at 5 pm I woke up . Then going to same
tea shop and knocking the door by asking
the people to go Choutha. Then tea shop owners reply they are here and She open the door.Then I visit the man whom I met
yesterday whom I told going Choutha together. We follow the road instead to
follow Danphe Lek where was more snowed remaining. In the group there was two
women and 3 boys including me. We are altogether 5 person in the group. We reached
Danphe lagna(Khai)at 12 noon then decided
to launch there. In the tourist general itinerary this is the 1 camp from Jumla.
I meet another group of people also where was
working in the village development committee in Choutha.they eat Dhal Bhat ,drinking
local wine with mutton. Almost 2 hours time spent there. Then we down to
Nwarighat took 1 and half hours . we took black tea in Nwarighat.Thanks
local villagers who assist me and
hospitable very much. Again walking more than 1 hours then I stay in kavra(1
hours before than choutha). Night become very nice with drink local wine and
goat meat. I stay the hotel those are
accompany from the jumla.

Choutha to
Dotu:
I waked up
late at 8 AM then take a tea and pay bill of the Hotel . Oh, I have to reach
Ghamgadhi Bazzar or Near distance from
the Rara Lake. Some parts of the trail was disturb by the remaining slippery
snow. I take a cup of tea at choutha. Then after some parts battery Charge I move
to Bhulbhule. I met the people from Humla in the Bhulbhule then he give the itinerary to go simikot if i like.I eat rice in Bhulbule then walk to the Ghamgadhi and even not reached i thought i will stay in Pinna. I remembered the pass called "Gochhi ko Lek". why people show me afraid when i travel i dnot know. somebody report me two person die in the Lek. so, i was afraid but i have many backup from the previous trekking. Perhaps the people donot know my carrier and my purpose to visit the Rara lakes. Because of my inner confidence i had no any anxiety about this. After i check in Army post then i walk up to the Gochhi lagna or Gochhi ko Lek. But way was not this difficult what yesterday was , specially before Danphe Lagna. i astonished the people comment this way. In the pass i see beautiful mountain in the western site horizon. Like other popular trekking region of Nepal in the Gochhi lek there are also fluttering the Buddhist flag.
My battery of camera going to finished i didnot chances to take photography when i down from the Lakes. I see the beautiful and colorful birds when iam down to Pinna. Oh! down was more difficult and two days before snows makes slippery the way. After i down half an hours i meet the 4 trekkers and Guide. I interfere them by asking the question "Where are you from". They replied they are from simikot and they arrive there within 6 days. Then, my imagine to go simikot more sharpen. Actually this events strengthen to go simikot for me. I speak the Guide also who was quite frank and easy going person. Then, i down down , again there are more down. finally i reached the road which is connected to the Talcha airport and Rara Lake. I meet two boys who are just going to climb up to the Gochhi lagna. Already 4 o clock that time. I encourage them , they can do.Walking the road i reached pinna and asked the people about the Rara lake. They inform the location and Hotel direction the place Dotu. Local people say this area specially Jhari. i reached there after one hours from Pinna then asking the place in the Mahadev Hotel in Jhari. Hotel owners know easily iam going there for the Rara Lakes. so, they welcome me from the warm cup of tea.
i talked the HOtel owners Jhari , he is very frank and communicate person. He describe the geography and his work. He been up to the Tibet , nearing to Mugu village. He also add Mugu is the district Name from the Big village Mugu which is takes 4 days to access from the Rara Lake. I enjoy the mutton curry rice and apple wine in his Hotel which is 2 hours before from the Rara Lake Hotel.

Then, paying the bill i walked up to the Rara lake. After walking 20 minutes i stop in the village to Charge the mobil phone. i drink tea with biscuits and talked with hotel owners. He told the stories about the simikot and limi valley with the foreign trekkers from Talcha airport. He also take a solar panel training in Kathmandu for 7 months. Again i walked up and meet the road to the Rara Lake. after walking 1 hours i see the Rara Lakes with some snows. I see the house looks like a hotel another side of the Lakes. Then i walk to reached there. Already one helicopter stayed there and flying before i reched the Hotel Danphe in Rara Lakes. Finally i reached the Hotel and rest there. i take chowmein and tea there. already i walked more than one hours around the lakes so i decided to go Talcha for that still i have walked 2 hours in the banks of the Lakes. i judge i visit most of the parts of the lakes even i have not climb up to see the down Rara Lake. I meet the Hotel person of Talcha in Rara lake this hotel already recommendation in Jhari.
